Custom Awning Design

This past summer, a new customer named Bill approached us to recover the fabric on two canvas awnings. The 2 awnings were in his backyard blocking on west facing windows. Both awnings had clearly reached the end of their usable life.

Bill's Existing Awnings

We scheduled a meeting to come out, measure and inspect the awning frames to insure they were still in good condition to be able to install new fabric.

After we removed the existing awning frames, we inspected all anchor hardware and building anchor points. We determined the anchor points were good to use on the reinstallation with new anchor hardware.

Bill informed us how hot his south facing living room gets with the summer sun beaming through the windows. We suggested a design to install 2 fabric awnings over the two south facing windows to cool down his living room and stop the sun from beaming in.

Bill Informed us he needed the awning frame to enclose the window. We decided we needed a design that mounts straight into wall to avoid anchoring any hardware into the efis.

Custom Awning Design Process

To kick off the custom awning design process we took measurements and pictures to create a sketch of the house. We then took a couple of the recommended designs and valances that he wanted and sketched/modeled them on the house. This enabled the customer to choose which design he prefers while getting a glance at the end-product.

The design of the awning frame was not a simple straight frame in the back, it had to contour and be installed around an efis that popped out about 2”. The customer decided the best-looking design was to match the existing fabric awnings in the backyard which was a traditional fabric awning and valance.

After the design process was complete, we scheduled an appointment to remove the 2 existing awning frames. Once the existing frames were stripped and cleaned, we got to work fabricating the 2 new awning frames that contour an efis.

The Customer chose to paint the new frames BG16 and repaint the old frames the same color. After the frames were fabricated, we fabricated the awnings out of Sunbrella (Silica-Dune). We then reused the original valance as a template for the new valance as the customer requested.
